Upon reviewing countless photos
and video footage of players and team personnel, we've noticed that lots of folks wore lots of different caps while employed
by the Gamblers. It's probable that these staff members sported the exact same caps that were sold at the Astrodome and other
retail outlets. The cap of choice for many coaches and administrators (including owner Jerry Argovitz) seemed to be a
simple all-black model with an adjustable mesh back, and simple embroidered Gamblers logo on the front.
The manufacturer's
tag has been removed from our cap, but it was originally sewn on the inside left of the sweatband. Because the white tag
could be seen through the mesh while wearing the cap (see the photo above, just above Argovitz' ear), many wearers chose
to simply remove the tag. We believe the caps were manufactured by AJD, which was the country's largest licensee of professional
sports caps in the 1980s.
We're all but sure that these
caps were also produced for the retail market, but they seem to be difficult to find these days. If given the chance, any
Gamblers collector should try to add one to their collection!
